Oil Management at TATA Steel UK

Details
Our waste and industrial teams have introduced an innovative way of managing waste oils produced at each of TATA’s south wales sites. We have developed a system by which oils are collected from Port Talbot and Llanwern, which then undergo a process of filtration to remove waste and chlorides, and a separate process to reduce moisture levels (<5%). This processed oil can then be re-used in the Morfa Coke Ovens (MCO’s), which is sprayed onto the coke during loading and increases the steel tonnage. We have also been able to transport tallow oil in a useable state from Trostre direct to the MCO’s for the same use.
There are two major benefits to our client, the first of which is the huge environmental improvement of reducing the landfill to nil, whilst also reducing the need for them to buy in processed fuel oil. It is estimated that the overall saving for the client runs into hundreds of thousands of pounds per year.
