The Bottle Yard Film Studios

Refurbishment Survey for Bristol City Council

Details

Bristol City Council (BCC) are the landlords of "The Bottle Yard", which is a large film studio based in the heart of the City. In 2010 the site stood unused after operating for more that 50 years as a former winery and bottling plant for Harvey's Bristol Cream. The studios opened in 2010 as a partnership initiative with Bristol City Council, transforming the disused industrial space into a busy creative hub for film and TV production.

MSS were initially commissioned by BCC to undertake a Management Survey of the 7 Acre site, which is a complex mix of buildings constructed between 1940 and now, some of which are listed. Given the age of the buildings, it is perhaps no surprise that asbestos containing materials identified have been widespread and varied in type, from sprayed coatings to cement.

The challenge in managing these ACMs has been magnified by the multiple layers of site management, tenants and 3rd party contractors who all manage or commission surveys in leu of refurbishments or changes to buildings prior to filming.

All woks are to be planned around filming, which means that noise and access is a major consideration, needing our teams to work around filming schedules. Access to height is necessary in many of the buildings requiring specialist equipment and training.

Since the commission of the original Management Survey, our teams have undertaken a number of other tasks, including refurbishment surveys, training and consultancy as well as project managing asbestos removal works.
